MuCell Molding Analysis

MuCell (microcellular molding) is a licensed process from Trexel Inc. (Woburn, MA). While it is often confused with structural foam, the two processes have very little in common. MuCell is a highly controllable process that allows the growth of cells with a maximum size of less than 100 microns. It is best applied to parts with a nominal thickness of less than 6 mm.

MuCell molding is very popular in the telecommunications, computer peripherals and automotive industries.

3D Shapes is the first consulting company to offer Moldflow simulation for the MuCell process. As with our other capabilities, we not only understand how to apply the simulation tools, we understand the process. This experience is what assures accurate simulation and diagnosis.

Our MuCell knowledge was acquired through extensive training at Trexel. This included classroom instruction, in-depth review of MuCell specific equipment and hands-on processing with a 150-ton Arburg press.

MPI/MuCell allows simulation of filling and cooling. The analysis will deliver benefits through optimization of venting, predicting weld lines, fill pattern, filling pressure, clamp tonnage and cooling.

MuCell analysis uses a midplane or Fusion mesh and is compatible with virtually any material in the Moldflow materials database.
